The Odyssey of the Green Jade Pagoda

Acclaimed as “the  eighth wonder of the world” in the mid-1930’s, the Alter of the Green Jade Pagoda is not only an unparalleled example of sophisticated jade carving, but also a materialization of one man’s vision and creativity. Sharing its journey across two
continents, this lecture by Museum Curator Dr. Tongyun Yin highlights the
historical and artistic values of the Green Jade Pagoda.

Geologist Sara Kurth presents an introduction to rocks and minerals. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on identification including observation skills and hardness tests. Great for rockhounds and Boy & Girl Scout badges. Adult supervision is required.

Sharks at Mazon Creek

Jack Wittry, Collections Associate at the Field Museum and author of the Mazon Creek Fossil Flora and Fauna books, presents the Mazon Creek fossil shark nurseries and discusses the controversy surrounding this topic. His new book on Mazon Creek plants will be
available for signing after the lecture.

Rockin’ Jewelry for Kids @ 10:30 a.m.

This beginner’s class allows children to make their own gemstone jewelry to keep. Choose two different types of jewelry to make with stones from the Museum Shop and learn how to work with jeweler’s tools. Great for Girl Scout Jewelry Badge, parties of 10 or more are encouraged to schedule a private class. Adult supervision required

All About Jade with Sakina Bharani

Continuing with her “All About” series, Gemologist Sakina Bharani will be presenting on “JADE.” She will discuss this beautiful gem’s origins, historical aspect and its presence in ancient and modern cultures. After the lecture, join her for a short tour of magnificent carved jade pieces of the Lizzadro Collection

Dino Discoveries

Children become dinosaur detectives with “Paleontologist Illinois Bones” to learn about the world of dinosaurs. Fossils and props are used to create an awareness of dinosaur characteristics. See live animals and how they are related to dinosaurs.

Come celebrate Smithsonian Museum Day, a one-day event in which Smithsonian Affiliate Museums across the nation provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Participants can download or print one ticket per email address to provide free general admission for up to two people (may not be used for Mazon Creek trip).
