Hands-On Programs

Start Your Rockin’ Collection
Ready to dig into the fascinating world of rocks, minerals, and fossils? In this hands-on program, kids will learn how to start their very own rock collection while discovering the unique characteristics of different rock types. Participants will bring in their own rocks for expert identification and get a chance to decorate a repurposed egg carton to display their treasures. To help get started, everyone will receive six rock, mineral, and fossil samples to add to their collection. It’s the perfect adventure for any budding rockhound!
Age Requirement: 5 years and up
Fee: This class is $10 per person with a 15 minimum requirement (30 max).
Length: 30–45-minutes

Rock and Mineral Identification Class

Age Requirement: 8 years and older
Fee: $10 per person with a 15 minimum requirement (30 max)
Length: 60-75 minute program

Jewelry-Making Class

Age Requirement: 8 years and older
Fee: $15 per person with a 10 minimum requirement (30 max)
Length: 45–60-minutes

Volcanoes! 
Join Sara Kurth, volcano expert, for an unforgettable journey into the fiery world of volcanoes! Discover the fascinating science behind different types of volcanic eruptions and what causes them to erupt in such unique ways. Learn about the hazards these mighty forces of nature pose to both people and the environment. With the option to dive into the basics of rocks and minerals, this interactive presentation is packed with hands-on activities, real rock samples, thrilling videos, and much more. Get ready for an eruption of excitement that’s sure to make learning about volcanoes a BLAST!
Age Requirement: 8 years and older, mixed group
Outreach Fee: $150 flat fee with no minimum or maximum requirement
Any subsequent lectures are $50 each

The Fossil Lady – She Sells Sea Shells by the Seashore
Travel to 19th-century England and meet Mary Anning, the trailblazing fossil hunter who revolutionized our understanding of dinosaurs, evolution, and extinction. In this immersive, living history presentation, you’ll hear firsthand stories of her incredible discoveries and how she helped reshape science. Explore real fossils, see animal representations, and view historic images that bring Mary’s world to life. It’s a journey through time you won’t want to miss!
Age Requirement: 5 years and older, mixed group

Please note that our area of service includes 25 miles OR 30 minutes from the Lizzadro Museum. Locations outside of the service area (City of Chicago included) may require extra fees
