Description
This meteorite comes from Gran Chaco Gualamba, Argentina. They are classified in group 1AB with an octahedrite structure. The crater field (26 craters) covers an area of 3 x 19 km with an associated strewn area extending out about 60 km. At least 2 of the craters contained thousands of small iron pieces. The craters were first reported in 1576, but the date of the meteorite fall is estimated to be around 4200-4700 years ago. The total weight of the pieces recovered exceeds 100 tonnes, making this meteorite the heaviest ever recovered on Earth.
