Calcite (calcium carbonate) is one of the most widely distributed and important minerals. It is found throughout the world in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. In the form of limestone and marble it makes up a significant portion of the earth’s crust. Industrially, calcite is used as construction materials, abrasives, agricultural soil treatments, pharmaceuticals, pigments and more. Calcite is most often white or colorless but also occurs in a variety of colors: blue, green, red, yellow, brown, and orange. Impurities, including manganese, magnesium, or iron, are responsible for the colors.
