Description
This fossil stone is from Erfoud area of Morocco in the Sahara Desert. Paleontological research shows that the area of Erfoud was an ancient seabed teeming with marine life. Ammonites, goniatites and Orthoceras are well preserved in the fossil stone marble from the area. Ammonites and Orthoceras are primitive members of the Phylum Cephalopoda and are the ancestral cousins of the octopus or squid. The fossils are named for their shape, the Orthoceras for the word that means “straight horn”, the Ammonite for the Greek God ” Ammon” who had ram’s horns on his head. The black and brown fossil stone is rich with Orthoceras and ammonite fossils from the Devonian period of the Paleozoic era, approximately 380 to 400 million years ago.
