Description

These meteorites come from Gran Chaco Gualamba, Argentina. They are classified in Group IAB with an Octahedrite structure. They are 92.9% Fe, 6.7% Ni, 0.4% Co. The crater field (26 craters) covers an area of 3 x 19 km with an associated strewn area extending out about 60 km. At least 2 of the craters contained thousands of small iron pieces. The craters were first reported in 1576, but the date of the meteorite fall is estimated (through carbon dating of charred wood beneath) to be around 4200-4700 years ago. The total weight of the pieces recovered exceeds 100 tonnes, making this meteorite the heaviest ever recovered on Earth. The largest fragment (El Chaco) at 37 tonnes, is the second heaviest single piece meteorite.

Size and shape vary for each pendant. Sizes range from 22mm-25mm.
