Description

Sheen or Rainbow Obsidian is formed as lava from volcanic eruptions cools within the earth. The speed at which it cools prevents crystallization and the rock forms as solid volcanic glass. Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, although the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. Iron and magnesium typically give a dark green to brown to black color. It may contain patterns of gas bubbles remaining from the lava flow, aligned along layers created as the molten rock was flowing before being cooled. These bubbles can produce interesting effects such as golden, silvery sheen, or rainbow obsidian.
