Description

Serpentine stone comes in a variety of colors. Colors range from white to grey, yellow to green, and brown to black and are often veined or splotchy. The color variations are a result of mineral infusions in the stone. The color and smooth or scaly apperance is the basis for the name, from the Latin serpentinus, meaning “serpent rock”. Serpentine is often used for jewelry and hard stone carving and can be mistaken for Jade. It is sometimes called false jade, Teton jade or new jade. Serpentine is the state rock of California.
