Tanzanite, a blue-violet colored gemstone is the main gem variety of Zoisite. Zoisite, also known as saualpite, is a calcium aluminum hydroxy sorosilicate mineral that’s formed during the metamorphism of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. In the right environment, Zoisite is found in the form of either prismatic crystals in veins or massive mineral formations. Zoisite has a hardness rating of 6.7 on the Mohs scale. Zoisite can range from sub-translucent to transparent and are usually vitrious and brittle. The crystal system is orthrombic. Zoisite occurs in the colors of green, blue to violet and pink to reddish. The other varieties of Zoisite are Ruby Zoisite (also known as Anyolite) is a mixture of red Ruby in green zoisite and Thuilite, a pink to rose colored variety.
