Description

A natural pearl is formed when an irritant works its way into certain species of oyster, mussel, or clam (mollusk). The mollusk creates a pearl sac to seal off the irritant. The mantle of the mollusk deposits layer upon layer of nacre (aragonite) around the sac until a pearl is formed. The unique luster of pearls depends on the reflection, refraction and diffraction of light from the translucent layers. The thinner and more numerous the layers in the pearl, the finer the luster. The overlapping of layers of nacre breaks up light on the surface of the pearl, causing an iridescent appearance. Pearls can grow in both freshwater and salt-water with very different hosts. Saltwater pearls grow within pearl oysters, which live in the oceans. Freshwater pearls form in various species of freshwater mussels which live in lakes, rivers, and ponds. Pearl is the traditional June birthstone.

This “industrial style” pearl bracelet is made from piano wire, to properly care for this piece do not over stretch it and keep it away from contact with water, oils, creams, etc. When opening the bracelet, be sure to pull it apart at the magnetic clasp not involving the wire strings. This will extend the life of your bracelet and maintain the integrity of the design.
