Description

Tremolite is a metamorphic rock that occurs in two distinct forms, crystals and fibers. Tremolite forms a series with actinolite and fero-actinolite. Although the most common color of tremolite is white or other pale colors, it may also be brown, greenish (colored by Fe), grass-green (colored by Cr and/or V), or purple (colored by Mn). Tremolite colored green by chrome (Cr3+) is often called Chrome-tremolite, whereas the purple variety, colored by manganese, is called hexagonite. The name “tremolite” comes from the Tremola Valley in Switzerland, where it was first identified in 1789. Its often found alongside other minerals like calcite, dolomite, and talc.
